How To Shot Movie Caps
Shooting a screencaps from movies is annoying because as you know not many tools can do that. For example standard print screen doesn't work. Of course you can try to use manual shooting frame by frame using capture tools like a HyperSnap, but I'll show you better way how to shoot all frames from a movie! So let's start:
First of all we're going to need a few things:
ImageGrabber II .NET
.NET Framework 2.0
Some movie in *.avi, *.wmv or *.mpg format
ImageGrabber is great tool for shooting caps from movies. The .NET version is up to date and works very good (there's also older version but it can't handle *.wmv files). After installing the tool we can see main window:
1. Main window, where movie will be displayed
2. Window where shooted screencaps will appear
3. Main toolbar with functions like rewind, play, shoot caps etc.
4. Toolbar with options
Now we need to open our example movie file to do that go to File > Open File... Now when the movie is loaded it will be automatically displayed in main window. We can pause it or stop it. Window will look like this now:
First step to shoot a caps is to decide if we want to shoot a single capshot or a session of them. To shoot a single capshot simply play video moment you want and push button with camera:
Now shooted capshot will appear in left frame window just like this:
There will be also displayed count of shooted capshots in left bottom corner. You can simply delete each capshot by clicking right mouse button on a frame and choose Delete:
Now you know how to shoot a single capshot but we want to shoot capshots from whole movie! To do that simply click on button with movie tape:
Now window will appear with message: Number of Frames to Extract:
We need to decide how many frames we want to shoot for example: 30 so click on OK button. Now all frames will proceed to extract (you need to wait it depends on movie's lenght and compression). When process is done everything should look like this:
You can delete frames that you don't like or just add some more frames by shooting them manually.
Now it's time to save your frames to shareable format but before we can do it we need to configure output format so go to File > Options...
Options window can look like this:
We need to set how many screencaps we want to display for example let's say that we want to view a 4 capshots per line so set Columns: 4, nowe we need to decide how large our capshots will be for example if you want to view a small caps you cen set Tile Width: 200 and Tile Height: 180 for bigger ones for example Tile Width: 300 and Tile Height: 170. Now let's set the spacing between caps for example standard spacing is: Gap Width: 4 and Gap Height: 4 but we can set 2:2 as well if we don't like big spacing.
Now we need to decide if we want to display basic infos about a movie. To do that select Details and choose where you want to display info for example Top Left or Bottom Right. We can also choose font of displayed info. Now you can set what you want to display for example movie's lenght, size and file name so add values like: [FILE_NAME], [FILE_SIZE] and [DURATION] it's fully customizable!
We can also set additional layout options like Drop Shadow etc. We can also set background of exported image.
Last thing to set are Labels it'll display a time of movie from which capshot was shooted. We can choose it's font as well.
Now when everything is set simply click on Ok button.
When everything is ready we save our screencaps we can choose if we want to save single capshot or whole serie, we want to export whole serie so go to File > Save File... Preview window will be displayed and you can change Options in real time but we just want to save our caps because we set-up everything before. So click on Save button and choose format *.png or *.jpg.
This is how my exported caps look like:
